Mary Pearson is a Barnardo’s Home Visitor that is conquering iTRI! Here is her story:
Oh My… I’m taking on iTRI!
Oh my… I have signed up to do the Barnardo’s iTRI, which is going to be something of a challenge for me, not just in the fact that I want to raise funds for Barnardo’s, but also a personal challenge to get back some of the old fitter me. The iTRI challenge is a long distance triathlon that is completed over the month of June, so that is swimming 2.4 miles, running 26.2 miles and cycling 112 miles.
10 years ago I was diagnosed with a condition called Sarcoidosis.
Sar.. what? I hear you say! Yeah, that was my reaction too!
I had never heard of the condition, but at the time lots of different bits of my body were not doing the things they should and I was just happy that someone seemed to know why.
Sarcoidosis is a disease involving abnormal collections of inflammatory cells that form lumps known as granulomas. The disease usually begins in the lungs, skin, or lymph nodes. Less commonly affected are the eyes, liver, heart, and brain. Any organ, however, can be affected. This means that when these lumps form your body’s immune system goes into overdrive and will attack not only the lumps but they organ itself.
I still have the condition, it doesn’t go away but I am lucky in that through various medications mine is under control. However, it has left its mark in that some of the medications have left me with a weight issue and although I can exercise it’s a long hard battle to get back to the old super fit me.
I am going use the iTRI challenge to not only raise funds, but challenge myself and whilst I have a whole month to do the triathlon in, for a fat, unfit 47 year old, believe me it will be a challenge!
I love working for Barnardo’s and anything I can do to help raise money and promote the amazing work all of our different services is incredibly rewarding.
If you haven’t signed up already – now is the time, come and join the #iTRIbe!
